A game theoretic ”mode-choice” model for freight transportation∗

چکیده
This paper uses simple game theory to analyze a situation where two agents compete in the transport market. The modeling frame is that of a mode choice model, where the two mode options are boat or car transportation. The basic findings are that non pareto optimal (car, car) equilibrium outcomes, may occur in a surprisingly large amount of cases. Additionally, the possible different Nash equilibria outcomes are fairly large leading to a situation which may be hard both to model and predict for regulatory authorities. Finally, in certain situations, subsidizing boat transportation may not lead to increased use of boat as transport modal choice.

Urban Freight Transportation Planning : A Dynamic Stackelberg Game - Theoretic Approach
In this paper we propose a dynamic Stackelberg game-theoretic model for urban freight transportation planning which is able to characterize the interaction between freight and personal transportation in an urban area. The problem is formulated as a bi-level dynamic mathematical program with equilibrium constraints (MPEC) which belongs to a class of computationally challenging problems. The lowe...
متن کاملA Dynamic Model for Evaluating the Utility of Railway Transit Corridors; a Case study of Bandar Abbas-Sarakhs Corridor
Currently, road transportation is the main mode of freight transit in Iran and about 90% of freight transit is done through this mode of transportation which is not in line with the transportation policies that based on them 70% of the freight transit should be done through road transportation and 30% of the freight transit should be done through rail transportation. However, Iran's railway net...
متن کاملFreight Demand Characteristics and Mode Choice: An Analysis of the Results of Modeling with Disaggregate Revealed Preference Data
Considerably less research has been done on modeling freight demand with disaggregate discrete models than on modeling passenger demand. The principal reason for this imbalance is the lack of freight demand data. Freight demand characteristics are expensive to obtain and are sometimes confidential. This paper analyzes the freight demand characteristics that drive modal choice by means of a larg...
متن کاملModeling the Container Selection for Freight Transportation: Case Study of Iran
Significant advantages of intermodal and containerized transport have increased the global interest to this mode of transportation. This growing interest is reflected in the annual volume of container cargo growth. However, the container transport inside Iran does not have a proper place. Comparing the count of containers entering and leaving ports with the statistics obtained from railway and ...
متن کاملAn empirical evaluation of the EOQ model of choice of shipment size in freight transport
Deciding shipment size is important in freight transport: it depends on the logistical imperatives of shippers and the technical possibilities of carriers. Shipment size choice is also closely related to transportation mode; it is therefore important from a public policy perspective. The theory of optimal shipment size and mode choice is robust. There are many inventory-theoretical models of op...
